thao nguyen is a korean-vietnamese illustrator based in cleveland, ohio. her artistic practice revolves around nature and birds, which she sees as symbols of freedom and our connection to the world. this piece was inspired by the quote, “a bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because its trust is not in the branch but in its own wings,” prompting her exploration of self-trust and the inner resilience we cultivate.

using relief printing techniques, she carves into a wood block to create dynamic line work that highlights the contrast between fragility and strength. through this piece, thao hopes to inspire viewers to reflect on their own journeys of trust.
